How many cameras, is too many? I currently have two, (S1R MkII X2) however I’m going on a couple of trips shortly and wonder if I might need a third? Maybe lightweight travel camera, or even a compact! (Shudder!). What does not appeal here, is that unless I spend an extortionate amount of money, it will not provide me with the image quality I’m used to and therefore, I’ll not like any of the pictures I take with it? There is little point in taking a camera that cost as much as one of my main mirrorless camera’s away with me if it’s just as tempting to the light-handed variety of people to grab and run off with?
Some answers maybe?
The question of how many cameras is too many really comes down to personal preference and the type of photography you plan to do on your trips. For many, two cameras—perhaps with different lenses or purposes—strike a good balance between flexibility and practicality. Adding a third, such as a lightweight travel camera or compact, could be worthwhile if you want something truly pocketable for casual shots or situations where you wouldn't want to risk your more expensive kit.
However, as noted, compact cameras often come with compromises in image quality unless you're prepared to invest heavily. If you don't think you'll be satisfied with the results, it may be more sensible to stick with your current setup. Alternatively, consider using your phone's camera for those quick, riskier snaps—modern smartphones often perform surprisingly well and are less tempting for opportunistic thieves. Ultimately, it's about striking a balance between convenience, image quality, and peace of mind while travelling.
My answer?
Now I'm at three!
