Am I a proper Photographer?
A proper photographer is someone who possesses both technical skill and artistic vision in capturing images. They understand lighting, composition, and camera settings, and are able to convey a story or emotion through their photographs. Whether professionally trained or self-taught, a proper photographer consistently demonstrates dedication to their craft and a commitment to producing high-quality work.
Personally, I take a run-and-gun approach to photography; I prefer not to wait for hours for the perfect lighting conditions. Instead, I compose and capture what’s in front of me, embracing the spontaneity and energy of the moment.
Despite not using techniques like masking, double exposures, time blends, merging multiple files, creating star trails, or focus stacking, am I absolutely still a photographer?
The essence of photography lies in your ability to see and capture compelling moments, not in the specific tools or post-processing methods you use. Many celebrated photographers prefer a straightforward, documentary approach, relying on their intuition and eye for detail rather than extensive digital manipulation.
Ultimately, photography is a broad and inclusive art form. Whether you use advanced editing techniques or keep things simple, your unique perspective and the stories you tell through your images are what define you as a photographer. Embracing your own style and approach is what makes your work authentic and meaningful.
As you continue to refine your craft, remember that photography is a journey shaped by personal growth and exploration; each image you create is a testament to your evolving vision, and as you experiment with different techniques, subjects, and environments, you’ll naturally develop a style that is uniquely yours, further enriching your experience and connection with the world through your lens.
